“The number of months In the sight of Allah Is twelve (in a year)-So ordained by Him The day He created The Heavens and the Earth; Of them four are sacred: That is the straigth usage. So wrong not yourselves Therein, and fight the Pagans. All together as they Fight you all together. But know that Allah Is with those who restrain themselves.”

…..Qur’an (Surah 9 Verse 36)

If you are one of those who believe that Hijrah of Rasulullah SAW to Madinah occurred on the 1st of Muharram then read on. This article will enlighten you on how this Islamic Calendar began…

Introduction

Islamic calendar is a purely lunar, as apposed to solar or luni-solar, the Muslim (Hijrah) year. It  is shorter than the Gregorian year by about 11 days, and months in the Islamic (Hijrah) year are not related to seasons, which are fundamentally related to the solar cycle.  This means that important Muslim festivals, which always fall in the same Hijrah month, may occur in different seasons.  For example, the Hajj and Ramadhan can take place in the summer as well as the winter.  It is only over a 33 year cycle that lunar months take a complete turn and fall during the same season.

The Meaning of Hijrah

‘Maal Hijrah” literally means ‘with Hijrah’ . However in the Arabic language usage this would mean beginning of Hijrah. What then does Hijrah mean. The word Hijrah mean to discard or migrate. Thus it carries the following meanings:

1. Recognition of the plot;

2. Migration from the plot;

3. Leaving witnesses for the plot so that the future generations can learn of and recognize the conspiracy against the faith.

The Islamic calendar is reckoned from the time of migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) from Mecca to Madina. Rasulullah’s decision to migrate from Mecca came after several years of inhuman treatment of the faithful by the powerful tribes who were united despite all their feuds to stop the spread of Islam.

The process of Hijrah actually occured  in the 13 th year of  Prophethood when Rasulullah was 53 years old. Prophet Mohammad’s decision to leave Mecca coincided with the Qureshies’ plan to assassinate him. In 622 AD, the Quresh tribesmen held a meeting and decided that a band of young men, one from each tribe, should  assassinate Prophet Mohammad collectively so that their responsibility for the murder could not be placed on any particular tribe.

On the eventful night on the 1st of Rabiul Awwal, the Prophet asked his cousin Ali bin Abu Talib to take his place in bed to make the Meccans think that he was asleep. The Prophet himself came out unobserved along with his loyal companion Abu Bakar r.a  (who was chosen as the first Caliph after the wafat of the prophet). They secretly made their way to a cave named Thur, not far from Mecca and lay staying hidden there for a day or two until Abu Bakar’s son reported that the search for him had been given up. Then the two set out from Madina on camel back. They reached Quba, on the edge of the Madina oasis, on 12th Rabiul Awwal. With Mohammad’s arrival in Quba a new phase of his career and glory of Islam started.

However the decision to make Hijrah as the beginning of the Islamic Calendar came much later. At that time though the 12 months of the Arabic months were already there, the beginning of the years were marked by different  memorable events which had  occurred earlier. The years of the Elephant, which is the years Rasulullah was born, was then widely used to mark the beginning  of the calendar.  This was the year when Abrahah’s army of Elephants marching to destroy Kaabah was crushed by the birds sent by Allah s.w.t. Another event that was used to mark the beginning of the Calendar was the war of Fijaar that occurred in when Rasulullah was 20 years old.

The decision to fix the beginning of the Islamic era was proposed and decided during the era of Omar bin Al-Khattab the second Caliph of Islam, 16 years after the hijrah event occurred. According to early Moslem scholars, Abu Musa Al Shari drew attention of Omar  r.a. to an improperly dated debenture or IOU which was payable in the month of Shaaban but it was not clear which Shaaban was actually meant, the present one or the coming one. Omar r.a. called the dignitaries for consultation  and a decision to create a calendar that represented an Islamic rule was made.

They made several suggestions to begin the Islamic calendar. Among  the dates suggested were  the year Rasulullah’s birth , wafat, nubuwwat, and the opening of Makkah . Finally the year of Hijrah, which was suggested b Saidina  Ali  bin Abi Talib r.a. was accepted. Thus in  the years 638 AD, Saidina Omar decided that Hijrah-which occurred on 622 AD- was to  became the the first year of the Islamic Calendar of Hijrah.

Though the Rasulullah’s migration  happened in the month of Rabiul Awwal there were a few reasons why Muharram was taken as the beginning of the Calendar. The main reason was that the Muslim’s of Makkah had already started migrating  since the month of Muharram. the other reason was that there were many memorable event in Islam which has occurred in this month.

This migration has a special significance in the history of Islam. It ended the Meccan period of humiliation and torture and began the era of success. In Madina the power of Islamic nation enhanced day by day. Here, the Rasulullah  was not only the religious leader but took the role of a politician and statesman too. Prophet Muhammad expired ten years after his migration to Madina but only in one decade he changed the course of human history.

The Last Lecture by Dr. Pausch Passed Away On July 25, 2008

Book by Randy Pausch – “The Last Lecture”

Randy Pausch, a terminally-ill Carnegie Mellon computer science professor, became a national celebrity last year after he delivered a celebrated lecture on how to live your life, which was viewed by millions on YouTube, and wrote “The Last Lecture,” which became a runaway bestseller.

‘We cannot change the cards we are dealt with,

just how we play the hand.’

He said you have to play the cards you are dealt in life. How you play those cards is your only choice. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because “time is all you have…and you may find one day that you have less than you think”). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humour, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Leading an Ascetic Life and Virtues of Simple Life

Why He (S.A.W.) Preferred Living Poor

Excellence of Leading an Ascetic Life, and Virtues of Simple Life

Prophet Muhammad (s.a.a.w.) lived a life of poverty from the day he was born till the day he died. Whenever, he had anything valuable, be it food, money, gold, or sheep, he preferred to give all away, even when he and his family were in need.

In an agreed upon hadeeth, the Prophet (s.a.a.w.) said, “If I had as much gold as the weight of Uhud, it would not please me to have a single dinar out of it with me after the passage of three days, but I would hold back something for the repayment of a debt. I would distribute it among the slaves of Allah like this and like this and like this.” And he (PBUH) pointed in front of him, and on his right side and on his left side. We then walked a little further and he (PBUH) said: “The rich would be poor on the Day of  Resurrection, except he who spent like this and like this and like this,”. and he pointed as he did the first time. “But such persons are few”.

Abu Hurairah (May allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “The world is the believer’s prison and the infidel’s Jannah (heaven)”. [Muslim].

`Abdullah bin `Umar (May allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) took hold of my shoulders and said, “Be in the world like a stranger or a wayfarer”.

`Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) died when my house was void of any edible thing except for a small quantity of barley I had on a shelf and from which I kept eating it for a long time. Then when I measured what was left of it, it soon finished. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

The following commentary is taken from the online version of Riyadu-Saleheen (Chapter 55):

During the last days of the Prophet (PBUH) the financial position of the Muslims had largely improved due to the spoils of war and he could have lived a comfortable life if he liked, but he stuck to the same austere life which he had led earlier. In this Hadith, `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) has related an account of the extremely austere and pious life of the Prophet (PBUH) although her house was the house of his most beloved wife.

This Hadith also tells us that in spite of his profound love for `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (PBUH) did not accord her any preferential treatment. He treated all his wives equally. Thus, this Hadith has a lesson for `Ulama’ and their families that they should not look towards worldly riches and the amenities enjoyed by them but keep in view the life of the Prophet (PBUH) and his wives and learn to keep themselves contented with minimum income.

`Abdullah bin Mas`ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) slept on a straw mat and got up with the marks left by it on his body. Ibn Mas`ud (May Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah! Would that you make us spread out a soft bedding for you.” He (PBUH) replied, “What have I to do with the world? I am like a rider who had sat under a tree for its shade, then went away and left it.”
[At-Tirmidhi].

Commentary: Beside mentioning the piety of the Prophet (PBUH), this Hadith tells in a very eloquent manner the reality of this world by means of an example.

487. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “The poor will enter Jannah five hundred years before the rich.”
[At-Tirmidhi].

Commentary:  Al-Fuqara’ (the poor) means those Fuqara’ who are perfect in Faith. Such people will go to Jannah five hundered years before the rich because the latter will have to account for their wealth, from where they had got it and how they had spent it, while the former will not be answerable for any such thing.

488. Ibn `Abbas and `Imran bin Al-Husain (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) said, “I looked into Jannah and saw that most of its dwellers are the poor; and I looked into Hell and saw that most of its inmates were women.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary:  The Prophet (PBUH) had observed Jannah and Hell either on the eve of Mi`raj (Ascension to heavens), or of Salat-ul-Kusuf (Eclipse prayer) in which he (PBUH) was shown Jannah and Hell. A large majority of Fuqara’ will go to Jannah. The rich people do not attach much importance to the requirements of faith and its practice.

The reason women are the majority in Hell is because they are given to taunts and curses and are ungrateful to their husbands. The Hadith urges women to try to overcome these serious defects in order to be saved from the Hell-fire.

489. Usamah bin Zaid (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) said, “I stood at the gate of Jannah and saw that most of those who enter it were poor, whereas the rich were held back; but those who were destined to go to Hell were ordered to be sent there (immediately).”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
